The Matara – Beliatta stretch of the Southern Expressway extension will be operational by end November, Road Development Authority (RDA) Chairman Nihal Sooriyarachchi said.
The 96km extension, costing Rs 255.2 billion and funded by Exim Bank of China and the Sri Lankan government, consists of four sections: Matara to Beliatta (30km, cost Rs. 113.5 billion); Beliatta to Wetiya (26 km, cost Rs. 55.2 billion); Wetiya to Andarawewa (15km, cost Rs. 31.5 billion); and Mattala to Hambantota via Andarawewa (25km, cost Rs. 56 billion).
There will be interchanges after Godagama at Aparekka, Beliatta, Kasagala, Angunukolapelessa, Wetiya, Sooriyawewa, Mattala and Hambantota. When the work on the Matara – Beliatta section was stopped by the contractor AVIC International due to non-settlement of invoices, the Chairman assured the firm that Cabinet approval for the settlement of outstanding invoices would be speedily sought.
